Second Best
No, I was never supposed to be like this;
To be a constant reminder of disappointment.
You ask, “Why was I born this way?”
Why was I born to such scorn?
That’s right. I was second.
In your eyes was the prayer in which you had not yet received--
A pinnacle of perfection.
And by your demand, a child so perfect that it would make you proud.
Yet, my gender had deemed my worth.
Despite the possibility of who I could become, words fell on deaf ears.
I always yearned the love you gave to others.
But my cries had gone unanswered--
And as you turned your proud backs to me,
I could only taste the bitterness of your objection.
My talents and moments of glory had gone unseen,
As if I never existed to you.
But, I still found the courage to forgive
Your indecency--though it evoked agony,
In spite of your ignorance and mien,
I found out that the only person to seek approval from
had never been you;
it had always been myself.

This piece was influenced by the kind of relationship I have with two particular family members (surprisingly not my parents!) It manly describes the difficulty I had to submit myself to and finally move on; realizing that their false idea of reality should not apply to me.
