- What Matters
The sun beam warms her cheek
Waking her up-beginning another school week,
She slowly but willing rolls out of bed-
Still trying to remember what day it is in her head.
First thing's first, take a look in the mirror-
Check the damage done from crying the night before,
Just a little bit puffy in the eyes
Hopefully no one will notice and she'll get by.
As she goes to turn away
She notices a dark shadow like spot on the side of her face-
Daddy made sure he left his mark;
Maybe that way she wouldn't 'question his smarts,'
Tears begin to well in her faded blue eyes
But she tells herself 'big girls' just don't cry.
So doing what she usually does she'll cover it up-
Running to the bathroom she pulls out the make-up,
Quickly but generously she cakes it over the bruise on her face-
Checking her reflection again she sees her hairs all out of place,
Probably from the night of tossing and turning-
Not getting but an hour of sleep in.
Downstairs she hears the house door slam shut;
Finally safe for her to leave her 'safe haven,'
Her heart aches and her bodies sore
But she'll play the part of a happy soul just like everyday before.
