Everything Is Not What It Seems
Author's note:
What inspired me to write this piece is how I am a teenager and I go through things too. I know a lot of people who deal with awkward situations or love. I feel like some people could be able to relate.
“Oh my gosh that’s crazy! Can you believe that this is already our second day of our Junior year?? I feel so old.” said Frankie.
“You’re right it is crazy…but can you believe that we’ve been friends since the sixth grade??” I told him.
Frankie smiled in awe. “Ugh time really does fly.”
All of these faces are still so familiar, I’ve known most of these kids since middle school, some even from elementary. There hasn’t actually been any new students recently. No one that has really caught my eye at least. Hopefully I meet someone new this year, if not, I still have Frankie.
The classroom door slowly started to open, and there it was, a new kid. I guess I spoke too soon.
“Don’t look now but…” said Frankie before he realized that I had already looked. He had a grin on his face almost like the Grinch’s before he stole Christmas.
“I know what you’re thinking Frankie and yeah, he is kind of cute.” I told him while acting uninterested.
The guy was wearing a black jacket with ripped jeans. I’ve never seen him before.
He sat down at an empty table in front of us. “Hi I’m Mrs. Robinson, are you new?” asked our English teacher.
“Yes.” He responded very quietly.
She scanned the attendance sheet. “Oh I see, are you Alex?”
“Yes ma’am” he responds while looking in my direction.
“He’s looking at you!!” says Frankie all excitedly.
“Don’t make it so obvious Frank!” I told him.
“Well I’m sorry Mel, but if you don’t get at him I will.”
I rolled my eyes at him and stared down at the “First day of class” assignment that they make us do every year. My favorite color? What I did over the summer? These are so basic.
I look up at the clock. Time is going by so slow. Maybe if I don’t think about it it’ll go faster. I start to scan the room for interesting things and there he is staring at me. Who knew that the new kid would be the one with the staring problems! Usually it’s the other way around. I don’t mind it though.
Class is almost over and I’m wondering what Alex is doing for lunch. I’m not sure if he knows anyone, this is only his second day at his new school. All I know about him is that he sure does stare a lot.
“You should talk to him Mel! He stared in our direction the whole time! It’s obvious that he’s into you, he even made eye contact with me for a while.” Said Frankie.
I mean he is sort of right. I haven’t had an actual boyfriend since seventh grade Michael. But we’re not going to get into that.
“Alright class leave your papers at the front desk before you walk out.” Said Mrs. Robinson.
We drop our papers off and walked out of the classroom and to our lockers.
“Oh won’t you look at that, he’s coming this way.” Said Frankie.
Suddenly I felt my face burn up.
“Hey” said a voice from behind me. I turned around and it was Alex!
“Oh hey” I said like I wasn’t freaking out inside.
“I noticed you in class and I was wondering if you wanted to go out for Lunch?” said Alex.
Frankie pulls me to the side and says “You better say yes!” and then turns me back around.
“Sure” I tell Alex.
“Oh and I’m Melissa by the way, and this is Frank.”
“But you can call us Mel and Frankie” said Frankie.
“Alright Frankie” said Alex with a smirk on his face.
“Alright well I’ll leave you two alone.” Said Frankie with a small wink.
Alex and I started to walk to his car which was also black.
“You must really like the color black huh?” I ask while laughing.
He shook his head with a smile on his face.
We get in and I can still feel my face burning up. I was pretty nervous because I’ve never actually been to Lunch with a guy other than Frankie, but it’s not the same. Alex seemed fine though.
“So it seems like you and Frankie are close huh?” said Alex.
“Yeah, he’s my best friend.”
“By the way, I hope you don’t find it weird that some stranger asked you out to eat.” He said while looking embarrassed.
“Not at all, you don’t have the face of a kidnapper” I said while laughing.
After laughing for a little, we drove to a pizza place that was down the street from our school and talked for a while. I think I might just like this guy. We got along well, almost like Frankie and I.
“So listen, the real reason I asked you out was to ask you for some advice.” He said. “Sure, on what?” I asked.
“Well…advice on how to ask out Frankie…I wanna get to know him” said Alex
And there I was staring blank with no words. I heard the sound of a record stopping. I was in shock.
“Oh yeah, um sure!” I said as if I wasn’t just planning out a future with him. This is so embarrassing!
I can’t believe that it didn’t click in my head that he was Gay! How did I not know?? My own best friend is Gay! I was embarrassed. Good thing he didn’t know. Everything really isn’t what it seems huh.
I’m not mad though, I just want Frankie to be happy.
