An Extraordinary Act of Kindness
When I hear these words the first thing that comes to my mind is an incident that happened to me when I was 10 years old. I was living in Nepal at that time. It was the year 2015 and my parent's friends had just come to town to visit us. So, we were going out sightseeing when suddenly literally out of nowhere the earth’s surface began to shake!! It was an earthquake. I was still a child back then so I was literally scared out of my mind !!! I couldn’t understand what the heck was going on. The earthquake only lasted like 2-3 mins but it felt like an eternity! I could hear people screaming while it was going on and even after. When it finally stopped there was dust everywhere even on my teeth and I could see anything. We couldn’t get our car to go back home because a tree had fallen in front of it. We took a bus back home. The bus was filled with people and while I was going home I looked out the window and all I could see was cracked roads people crying, parents trying to stop their toddlers crying, collapsed buildings, it was a horrifying sight for a 10-year-old. When I finally got home we couldn’t stay in because there were still after tremors of the earthquake so it was not safe. So we all went to the park where it was an open space.
That was the moment I saw humanity and kindness. People irrespective of any discrimination were helping each other. There was this one guy whose leg was broken during it and this stranger was helping him get to safety. Even a lady offered me a piece of cheese and I didn’t even know her, It was a beautiful sight! This was an extraordinary act of kindness!! People help each other irrespective of their caste, gender, sexuality, etc.
