Helen Keller challenged that “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved” (Keller). Helen Keller’s lack of communication skills is somewhat similar with my own. They both happened for very different reasons. Much like Helen Keller overcame her obstacle of not being able to communicate, I overcame my obstacle of Asperger’s Syndrome.
Helen Keller had to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate. When Helen was a baby, she got sick, becoming deaf and blind. The Keller family hired Annie Sullivan to teach Helen. Annie taught Helen trust, obedience, and how to communicate.
Like Helen, I also had to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate caused by Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s Syndrome is like autism, but far more common. To overcome it, I went to Speech Therapy for two years, Physical Therapy for four years, Occupational Therapy for five years, and Counseling for three years. Although I will always have Asperger’s Syndrome, I no longer let it define me.
Although our obstacles were different, they shared some common threads. Neither of them had cures and affected our abilities to communicate. However, Helen’s was very prominent. Neither of us had truly overcome our obstacles.
Much like Helen Keller overcame her obstacle of not being able to communicate, I overcame my obstacle of Asperger’s Syndrome. What we came learn from Helen’s obstacle is do not let physical limitations define you. My obstacles lesson is that mental limitations should not define you. “The world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming,” challenged Helen Keller (Keller).
