Obstacles of an Athlete
“Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.” challenged Helen Keller (Keller). Around two years of age in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Helen Keller gained an obstacle that she would have to fight to overcome. A year ago in Olney, Illinois, I began to fight my own obstacle to become a better athlete. Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of not being able to communicate, though my obstacle was much different, I too overcame my obstacle.
Helen Keller worked alongside Annie Sullivan to overcome her obstacle. Scarlet Fever left a healthy two-year old girl completely blind and deaf. The Keller family hired Annie when Helen was around five years old, to teach her. Annie with determination was able to teach Helen trust, obedience, and the art of language to overcome Helen’s obstacle.
I, like Helen, had an obstacle to overcome. I had to overcome the things that were blocking me from being the athlete that I knew I could become. I pushed myself to run harder and lift heavier, so I could build up my endurance and strength. This made me stronger than ever before, and built my body so it could withstand the goals I wanted to achieve.
Although our obstacles were very different, we share similarities when trying to overcome our obstacles. Helen had a wonderful and passionate teacher that pushed her to improve, the same way my dad coached and supported me to refine myself. In both of our obstacles it took time for us to get where we needed and wanted to be, it was not something that was going to happen overnight. With both time and a secure teacher both Helen and I were able to succeed.
Helen Keller overcame her obstacle of not being able to communicate, and I too overcame my obstacle. Helen taught me that to defeat any challenge you have stay determined. Knowing once I got to where desired, I would be grateful that I had worked hard to prevail over my obstacle. “We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world.” challenged Helen Keller (Keller).
