The Time I Learned A New Language
Helen Keller once speculated “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it” (Keller). Helen Keller was diagnosed before age two with meningitis which soon caused her to be blind and deaf. I faced the obstacle of getting an A in spanish. Much like Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of not being able to communicate, i too overcame my obstacle of getting an A in spanish.
Helen Keller had to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate. When Helen was a baby she got sick and became deaf and blind. The Kellers hired Annie Sullivan to teach Helen words have meaning. Annie was able to teach Helen trust, obedience, and language to overcome her obstacle.
Like Helen Keller i also had to overcome my obstacle. My obstacle was getting an A and not just getting an A, but understanding spanish class. I overcame this obstacle by being proactive and asking for help when i was confused. I was able to overcome this obstacle by not being absent, doing homework, studying, and paying attention in class.
Although our obstacles were different we do share a few similarities. Helen, and I shared the similarity of us both having to put in time and effort in order to succeed. Another similarity is that while learning the language we reached a frustration point. Altogether we shared a huge similarity of learning a language that's new to us.
Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of communicating, as i too overcame my obstacle of getting an A in spanish. I learned from Helen's experience that you can't let things keep you from achieving great goals. I also learned from my experience that the more you work at it, the easier it becomes. Helen Keller once said “While they were saying among themselves it cannot be done, it was done” (Keller).
