One Of My Greatest Obstacles
Helen Keller once said, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”(Keller). When I was in the 6th grade, right around November, I became ill with pneumonia. All I remember is the unbearable pain in my ribs, and for a whole month straight. Much like Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of not being able to communicate, I too overcame pneumonia.
Helen Keller had to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate which caused numerous problems. When Helen was a baby, she got sick and became blind and deaf. The Keller’s hired Annie Sullivan to teach Helen. Annie was able to teach Helen trust, obedience, and language to overcome Helen’s obstacles.
Like Helen Keller, I also had to overcome an obstacle. My obstacle was a month-long struggle with pneumonia. Primary issues I had with pneumonia included intense pain in my rib cage, a constant fever/headache, and nausea. I overcame my struggle by cooperating with doctors, and being taken care of by my parents.
Although our obstacles were different, we share some similarities. One similarity is that we both had to be taken care of constantly by our parents. Another similarity is that Helen and I both had to cooperate with people around us, such as doctors, and our parents. We both had a type of illness, and to overcome the struggles along with that illness, Helen and I needed cooperation.
Much like Helen Keller overcame the obstacle of not being able to communicate, I too overcame pneumonia. I learned from Helen’s experience to never give up, no matter what the struggles are. I learned from my experience that even if you are severely ill from a disease, to remember that soon, you will heal. In the famous words of Helen Keller, “Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look at the world straight in the eye.”(Keller).
