Grad Party Prep

“Hey Logan, wake up,” my mom called from my bedroom door. “Sierra’s grad party is at four so do whatever you need to do to be ready by then”.

Without thinking about what she said I responded with a “Will do” before rolling over and falling deeper into the cave of comfort known as my bed. I think about getting up for about 20 seconds before surrendering to my blankets and deciding that the best use of my time would be to watch TikTok for however long. I grab my phone and check the time, 3:15, then continue to open TikTok… Before the app loads I pause for a second, Did Mom say the grad party was at four? I thought to myself…

I snap out of whatever tired daze I was in and jump out of bed in a hurry and run through a quick mental checklist: first grab clothes, second shower, third brush teeth, fourth be ready before four. I quickly grab a pair of cargo shorts and a shirt from my closet and scurry to the bathroom to take one of the fastest showers of my life then brush my teeth.

Once I finish getting ready I check the time and a wave of relief washes over me, 3:30. I walk over to my mom’s room to quickly ask about when we need to leave.

“We should probably head out around 3:45”, she says. I give her a thumbs up then head downstairs to wait.

When I get downstairs I remember something, a few days ago my little sister made brownies and decided to check if there are any left. To my surprise, there are; though they’ve gotten a little stale over time a brownie is still a brownie, after I just got ready so fast I decide that I deserve one. I grab a sharp knife that I’m certain can cut through the chocolate rocks and barbarically start cutting an outline of a square around one of the brownies. The final step is possibly the most difficult. The brownies are very stuck to the container they’re in but I’m sure that as long as I hold the container sturdy and push the knife hard enough under the brownie my treat will be mine. I position my hand and the knife and with all my strength push it as hard as I can. Shreeeeko! The knife scrapes along the bottom of the dish, pops the brownie out and my plan works perfectly… almost…

I reach for the brownie but there's a problem with my hand. I look over and there's the knife. I guess the sides of the container are curved and the knife followed that curve out of the dish and into my hand. I try not to panic and go through a quick checklist: not a lot of blood, I don’t feel it yet, and the knife isn’t serrated. I hurry up the stairs to show my mom. As expected, my mom was flabbergasted but was hasty to get us in the car to hurry to the emergency room and call my Aunt to tell her that we won’t be able to make it to the party.

This piece happened a few years ago and everything after the story ends I was alright and just needed a few stitched in my hand.
