tornado's and trailer
I had been living with my grandma after getting expelled for fighting at my old school so I had been staying with her for about three weeks at the time I woke up this day to my dad calling me saying “Get ready we got a job to do boy get ready to go”
he said angrily through the phone I threw on my old blue jeans that were now purple and white from the purple primer and plumbers putty. I hated plumbing. I never had the guts to tell my dad though I was his only help, so I just sucked it up and got to work. It was a stormy day. The sky was as gray as the water from the toilet. My dad and I were fixing in a rich neighborhood. I always hated working with my dad because he never paid me but made me carry the toilets and the showers and every single tool. My dad would always somehow get the purple primer and plumbers putty all over everywhere on himself and I would get it on me too. It stains your blue jeans from dark blue to dark purple.
We finally got the toilet slammed into the floor as my dad made me sweep the floor. I walked out of the rich lady’s bathroom and heard the screeching noises from the plastic they put down so our boots didn’t ruin their nice carpet. I had to go back about three times into the lady’s mansion and the last time I walked out the plastic was ripped and torn to shreds.
With a final slam of the truck door, the rain started to come down In little drops I had never really liked storms but with a quick “Man up” from my dad, I pushed the emotions deep down inside of me so as to not piss him off. Quickly I remembered my Xbox was at my grandmas and If I was going to stay at my parent's house for the weekend I would be damned if I could play CoD with the boys. So after some useless convincing he finally agreed to stop and I ran in grabbing my backpack and my Xbox leaving muddy wet footprints through her house. I quickly ran back to the truck because it was pouring rain at this point we flew home I watched as the sun disappeared and the gray clouds turned to even darker clouds as the rain came down harder and harder my heart beat sped up as I started to sweat we were arriving closer and closer to our old rackety trailer house.
I jumped out of the truck throwing my backpack over my shoulder and ran inside jumping over the deep river that was forming in my driveway as I ran past my mom throwing my boots off only being 14 I was running past everyone not saying HI to a single one after being gone for almost a month and enjoying my life living somewhere else. I made it to my room it looked like I left it, legos on the floor, baseball cards scattered all over. I plugged in my Xbox and called my friends Ricky was out riding his old four-wheeler in the mud, and Ben's power was out so he couldn't play Xbox with me so I just sucked it up and started to watch a Stephen King movie, Christine.
I started getting worried about the tornado warning on my phone so I packed up my xbox about to get ready to beg my mom and dad to let me leave this old rickety trailer house that barely survived the duratio and I threw on an old flannel my grandpa gave me and a white t-shirt on and my same stained up jeans and boots as I walked into the living room my dad was just coming in from watching for a tornado as we talked about how this storm that was gonna be crazy.
I walked up to my mom who was smoking a cigarette out the back door I tried to convince her to leave and go somewhere with a basement and a foundation instead of 4 wheels and bricks holding it up
she told me “Quit being a chicken danial we survived the duration in this trailer we'll be fine it's just a little wind and rain calm down I'm not gonna waste my gas”
I quickly got mad but I ran to my room to grab my bag and call my grandma to come and get me and I pulled my phone out I heard a noise a sound I've never heard before it was howling I quickly ripped the blanket off my window seeing nothing but wind. A tornado
“Oh dang” I yelled forgetting my Xbox and swinging the door open as I saw my mom yell “Get to the bedroom hurry”
I was running behind my little brother and dad when he fell and stopped us all. I reached down for him but my dad had him before me. Then with a smash of the kitchen window, the house picked up
aww dang, I'm dead I thought to myself as the house picked up and slammed down I fell and landed on my dads legs the hardened plumbers putty cut my face as the primer on his pants made my eyes water I looked up and saw the meat fridge falling as I closed my eyes accepting death then blackness. I woke up seeing the house flipping and everyone flying around seeing the fridge just floating and smashing around seeing the walls rip apart and the insulation from the walls filling the room like a cup getting water.
Then just the wind hitting me as I saw our kitchen get flipped upside down. It all went black again. I awoke shortly to a stabbing in my back I couldn't open my eyes I thought I was dead and wasn't able to breathe or open my eyes I heard my sister yelling I knew this was no time to be a boy it was time to man up I pulled my arms up swallowed whatever was in my throat, feeling it cut my throat on the way down I removed all the insulation from my former house out of my eyes and just looked around for a second not realizing what happened until I saw it. It was the most soul-crushing thing in my life, seeing my sisters legs she was trapped under all of our trim and the dishwasher from our house I had no concern for my life at that point and I started to break the trim with my fists and I took a break to look for my dad climbing out of what was left of our house I seen my dad and brother I yelled out “help” I ran back cutting my legs on the jagged wood and broken tables and chairs I made it back to my sister to pull the dishwasher off of her and break the rest of the trim yanking her out of the pit of broken wood and glass she was in I watched as the trim cut her face open. That was nothing compared to what I thought was gonna happen when the tornado came back. I had grabbed my sister sheltering her with my body from the hail and the rain ready to throw her back into the pit she was in before I pulled her out of it. I had no clue if the tornado was coming back to take us but I was ready to sacrifice myself for my sister until the hail and the rain stopped. I covered her with my body getting pelted with hail and Not feeling any of it, just feeling numb and ready to die.
BE prepared to throw her back into the house be ready to die you have to be ready you have to save your sister, Dan, I kept repeating to myself over and over until the rain stopped and I threw her out of the house because I saw my dog and my mom trapped under some rubble form what was her bedroom I climbed through what used to be our kitchen until I got to her she had the rusty old fridge door stabbed through her leg, I Hadn't realized it was in her leg until I ripped the fridge door out and she started to bleed it had sliced through her muscle and it was falling out of her leg I threw up upon the seeing that in person I never thought I would see that. the hotdog and mountain dew I had for lunch came up everywhere I quickly threw my flannel over it until I got her out of our house.
There he was, my dog Doobie a black lab I had completely forgotten about him and Butter. I climbed down in the house and cut my arms on the jagged nails and broken wood but I grabbed him and got him out of the house carrying him down. I had finally seen my family everyone was there except Butter my mom was yelling for him “Butter butter come back Butter Oh god Butter please be ok Butter boy come here”
I was still in shock and had so much adrenaline pumping through my veins I just yelled out “screw that dog Mom we have to go he's dead get over it”
I threw my dog in the back of the truck and started to look around
“My phone is gone, I still have AirPods and my wallet. What the heck God'' I yelled out at the sky. smelling gas I turned around The gas line was broken in half propane was spilling out everywhere getting dizzy I yelled
“Dad propane” he quickly ran over and shut it off. The water was still flowing But My neighbor took off in the truck with my dog, mom, brother, and sister towards their house as her husband drove down towards my flipped house. I just sat there in shock seeing my car destroyed the Camaro crushed and my bed gone I just laid down in the mud and thought about all of my stuff that is now gone I was just pissed off and I got up hearing a jingle of a dog collar Butter was alive He ran over to me as the neighbor pulled into the driveway I picked up butter and threw him in the back of the truck wanting to get out of that place as quick as possible as we took off out of our driveway as the tornado sirens went off shooting a thrilling noise that would scar me forever.
”It was late, the siren was late, my whole family could have died because the tornado siren was 9 minutes late” I started to yell out as my dad told me to shut up. I quieted down as he said that. I just sat there couldn't move couldn't talk I didn't want to. Then I heard a familiar noise my aunts yell that sounded like someone was strangling a cat I looked up and sure enough there was my goofy aunt she had started to run over to me and my dad through the road not realizing there were downed power lines she was jumping over. Seeing the sparks flying I thought she was dead she was gonna get shocked to death somehow she jumped over 10 downed power lines and ran over to me to hug me I just sat there speechless I just asked to borrow her phone as I typed in the number to facetime my best friend I told him “its gone it's all gone man” he didn't believe me until I flipped the phone around and there he seen my home ripped apart, my room was destroyed my brand new 65-inch tv and 200 dollar sound bar was just destroyed all my possessions gone in a second the stuff I saved my money for the stuff I worked my butt off for over a year to get all gone in five seconds. As my aunt snatched the phone back I just sat back down staring at what used to be my house until we took off for the neighbors' house there I finally saw my mom saying to her
“Look who was right and look almost killed the whole family because you didn't wanna waste gas.'' My grandma pulled up honking her horn. I grabbed my shirt as I started to walk down to her car taking the ditch so I wouldn't get shocked to death. I sat in her car waiting until I saw my uncles out of nowhere carrying my siblings down to her car with my mom. They all got in the car and we took off for the hospital. We had made it in record time. The doctors said I was fine. They bandaged my sister's face and my little brother was fine. They wanted to keep my mom overnight because of her muscles in her leg being cut so I went home with my siblings and my grandma. We got home a little bit later and I just walked inside and sat down on my bed trying to sleep but having constant flashbacks of waking up on my back and being pelted with hail and the insulation in my eyes blinding me. staring at the old creaky ceiling fan, I didn't realize it had been 2 hours I had sat there staring at the wall I only realized it when my mom and dad came back to my grandmas and I didn’t even wanna speak to them I just locked the door and tried to sleep waking up every hour from a different nightmare.

this piece means so much to me after so many people lost there lives in the same tornado that took my home and almost my life. I've struggled with PTSD and anxiety from storms even 2 years later the 2 year anniversary is coming up on march 5th 2024.
