The first day of my internship experience at Stariver Environment
My first day started in the office of the company's Deputy Chief Engineer. We had a long conversation about the current climate situation and discussed some effective methods to slow the pace of climate change. During this conversation, he posed me several insightful questions. One question I remembered very clearly is: Are our current technologies and means of dealing with industrial and chemical waste effective?
With this question in mind, I continued my day discovering the methods and technologies the company is using to dispose of industrial and chemical wastes.
A lovely lady brought me to an exhibition hall, where I was thoroughly introduced to the company's business and technologies. There, it was the highlight of my day. I've never thought I would be exposed to the cutting edge of modern technology. For example, the company and Huawei established an exclusive system where they can call up all the monitoring of subsidiaries across China. They can also detect the precise location of the waste-transporting trucks and the amount of waste within every truck. I've never thought these advanced technologies could be effectively utilized today at a company level.
With this machine's help, I could see many sites thousands of kilometers away from me in real-time. Using these images, the lady guided me into discussing their methods of disposing of industrial and chemical wastes. She explained that although they can use technology to extract some reusable materials and reduce a certain number of toxic pollutants in the waste, technologies are yet advanced enough to dispose of this waste entirely. Most waste will be burned or broken down into ashes or smaller pieces before entering landfills. However, some waste will enter landfills in its entirety.
This made me think back to the question Deputy Chief Engineer insight me earlier today. Although modern technology today is more advanced than ever, our methods of disposing of waste we create are yet to be effective entirely. Currently, our ability is limited to reducing the effects wastes may bring to the environment by gathering the waste to fixed locations, but it doesn't solve the problem fundamentally.
“Today we have devices that allow us to communicate with people from the other side of the world, we’ve programmed robots that can almost think like humans, we have rockets that allow us to land on surface of the moon… But why are we still having problems disposing the wastes we produce? Is it because the business won’t make as much profit to entrepreneurs or is it simple because we don’t give this problem the attention it deserves?” All of these questions swarmed into my mind as I reflected on what I saw during on my way home.
Earth’s environment is a home that almost eight billion humans share, but among the billions of human beings there are few that care enough to protect and conserve it. Sadly, many people are still continuing to pollute and damage the environment for their own sakes. Strong senses of unfairness are hitting me right now as I am writing this, and I am getting very irritated. Why should I care so much and be so desperate to protect our shared home when so many people are pretending like its none of their business!
But I guess there must be people who need to act more responsible. As a member of this planet, I have the responsibility to protect and take care of its environment, regardless of what other inhabitants decide to do. There will also be people going against what you are doing, and the only way to effectively dispose wastes or to solve any other environmental issue I decided to tackle in the future, I need to stay true and determined to my passion despite what other people decide to do about our environment.
