I never liked my coaches. There would be a nice one once in a while but most of the time they weren’t. They were the coaches that had a very obvious favoritism towards the people who were on the best team, or the people who got the highest scores at competitions. 

She would never get mad at the favorites. 

I was never a favorite of her. We would always get yelled at for our poor scores at competitions or how lazy we were because we couldn’t fulfill her dreams perfectly. 

Only the favorites could. 

“4th place is not good enough,” she scolded. “Anna you were late the whole routine.” She looked at me. "You weren't even trying." I was trying. I could just never satisfy her expectations.


The author's comments:

For this set piece I was focused on writing in first person and switching from dialogue to action. It came from the Write like Sonia Sanchez Assignment. I showed my inner thoughts near the end and also tried to include repetition.
