Ground Zero

I met James on the first day of kindergarten. I walked right up to him and said, “Want to be my friend?” Ever since then we have.

In seventh grade walking past James while he was washing his hands I pinched the back of his arm and walked out.

Now it’s important to mention that James is a hockey player and he is very good at hitting people into walls.

About halfway back to my class I suddenly was slammed into the lockers and fell down landing right on my thumb. For the next 30 minutes my thumb was throbbing and swelling. I asked my teacher to go to the health room but she said that I was fine.

After school my mom was concerned so we went to urgent care and got an x-ray. Turns out I broke my thumb and needed a cast. My teacher never admitted she should have let me go to the health room.

Fast forward to right before freshman year and James and I are in the woods behind my house. He’s standing about 15 yards away and I picked up one of the black walnuts that had fallen. I chuck the walnut—or what I thought was a walnut—straight up in the air (to this day James doesn’t believe that).

The walnut comes down right on his head.

“AGHH WHAA”, and James looked back at me with the most betrayed face I had ever seen someone wear.

“The tree dropped it right on your head”.

“I didn’t know the tree could throw them at people”.

He didn’t break a bone like I did so I don’t know if I truly got my payback. To this day he still has a bump right at ground zero.

Now did I feel bad about hurting my friend, yes of course. But part of me also wishes I had gotten a video of it.
