“The Perks of Being a Barista” is a great nonfiction piece. It sucks you right into the hectic life of a Starbucks barista. The narrative also shows how crazy a regular day at Starbucks can be. Renee Hughes does a great job at telling the reader about what it is like to work as a Starbucks barista. Throughout the piece, I found myself learning new things about working at Starbucks and what it is like to be a barista in every captivating paragraph.

Hughes describes her fellow baristas and the normal day very well. As a regular Starbucks customer, I could highly relate to what she was describing as a Starbucks day. “See, day in and day out, we serve hundreds of customers and it can get all sorts of crazy,” Hughes says. She also describes her co-workers as “jellyfishing ninjas” because instead of getting overwhelmed or frazzled, they jellyfish instead. Hughes provided the readers with an amazing “behind the scenes” experience at Starbucks.
