"Homophobia Is Gay"
"Homophobia is Gay"
Frank iero, former rhythm guitarist of My Chemical Romance, half of DeathSpells and vocalist of LeATHERMØUTH, once donned a t-shirt with this phrase scribbled on with Sharpie. Now, a common reaction to this quote is "But that doesn't make sense!" Well, you're right- it doesn't. But then again, neither does homophobia. Not only did My Chemical Romance have a strong anti-homophobic atmosphere, but the quote in itself is ridiculing the fact that many gay-hating people tend to use the term "gay" in a negative way.
MCR was well known not only for their music, but for the message they strove to send to their fans and all people in general. This message can be found in lyrics, interviews, quotes and even the members' Twitters. In fact, they even incorporated it into the way they acted live on stage. All the members strongly agree that all people should be treated equal, and that you should always keep going no matter what happens. "We'll carry on, we'll carry on, and though you're dead and gone believe me, your memory will carry on!" Because if you love everyone and care for everyone equally, then you will be remembered, but if you stay with everyone else and don't accept differences- be it sexual orientation, opinions, or the way others dress and act- then you'll be forgotten with the rest. And quite Frank-ly, they got the message across quite effectively.
Now, back to that one quote. MCR also scorned homophobia. Though all the members of the band are heterosexual, they made sure to do things like sharing very close quarters on tour to make sure that no homophobic people would feel comfortable attending their concerts. The band simply did not stand for any kind of hateful behavior.
Mcr was just overall a very understanding band, and very good role models for various reasons. They addressed various issues in their songs, including but not limited to: the way adults often look down on teenagers, gun regulation laws, and people taking life too seriously.
In conclusion, from their understanding attitude, to their open-minded atmosphere to their powerful message, My Chemical Romance is most definitely a band to look up to. I know for sure that I look up to them, and i don't know why anyone else wouldn't.
