Night Work in December
the frosty gray before the sun,
the land untouched by sullied eyes—
some lives on pause and
light approaching
one by one,
the lights click on,
the spell is broken.
gleaming from treetop:
sun peering as if timid
& crawling above pines.
sky alert and orange,
ready and purple,
welcoming today.
and so shaking off sleep
many brains thaw
while you retreat to bed,
living a countermelody:
parallel lives running
but never meeting.
