"The optomist proclaims we live in the best of worlds, and the pessimist fears this is true." - James Branch Cabell

I broke open the hard shell
And removed the small strip of paper.
My fortune told me that
Things would get brighter.

I sipped my tea,
We discussed my future.
My mother told me that
Things could get brighter.

I cried in my sleep
Falling faster and faster.
Nowhere in my dreams
Were things getting brighter.

My hope for the future
On small strips of paper
Destiny tells me that
Things can get brighter.

I liked how this poem was about something seemingly insignificant, yet you made it seem important. I keep every fortune I get in hopes that somehow they'll come true.

good poem. (thanks for commenting on mine, by the way, and you're right -- i do put emphasis on where to end the lines, and in almost all of my poems it's irregular.) I like how you describe the feeling of wanting things to be better but always being just a little bit cynical
