My Making
My Making
I am made of Irish roots,
Whose stems are strong and colorful.
Shotgun house so cozy and small,
And lots and lots of baby dolls.
I am made of red beans and rice on Mondays,
Mass and family nights on Sundays.
Barbies, Beanie Babies, and soft Care Bears
Are some of the special treasures for which I once cared.
I am made of the colors of purple, green, and gold,
And Grandpa’s funny jokes and the odd stories he once told.
Santa’s lap on Christmas Eve,
A week in Waveland’s cool summer breeze.
I am made of home sweet home,
Never envious of those who roam.
Of painting and drawing, my gifts from blood,
Memories of hide and seek and playing in the mud.
I am made of “Do your best!”
Study hard and ace those tests.
The sweet taste of Nanny’s famous apple pie,
A craving I will always have until the day I die.
I am made of backyard adventures and daring trips to high tree tops,
While sucking on rainbow popsicles and ice-cold freezie pops.
Dad swinging Nick and I for days and days,
Sitting on the street corner with Molly selling our sour lemonade.
I am made of pear shaped, womanly figures,
Beautiful cursive and slanting signatures.
Of the old music that gives my heart its passion and beat,
And surprise trips to Audubon Zoo, a once all-time favorite treat.
I am made of both past and present,
Rich in love but with dollars of a peasant.
Dreams keep my hope alive,
For love and happiness is what I ultimately strive.
