The Champion Within

Day after day
It is the same
Da comes home drunk
And calls us so brutal a name
In my dad’s eye’s
I would never be good enough
You see
I wasn’t good at football and stuff
I played the piano
And loved to swim
Then one fateful day
Da saw that I was good and could win
Father kept his eye on my brother John
He entered us in a race
Against each other
I lost my pace
John won that one
The next one I did
It was da that I had beaten not him
At the Olympics I strove for gold but got silver
Accepted at Harvard
Away I go
Leaving behind a family I should guard
Da was not the best one in the world
His moods would swing
And so would his fists
Making a streak of a little red something
Mother could not take it anymore
She tried to escape
Too many sleeping pills she took
Nearly leaving her in worse shape
I still went to America
And fulfilled my dream
I wanted to be the best I could be
And that was just being me
My life had its difficulties
But I stuck up my chin
And just kept walking
Toward the champion within!
