Hiding From Me
No, I told you, you cannot hide yourself from me.
Or haven’t I told you?
I know I imagine saying it to you.
I might have imagined it this time, too.
I might just be hiding from you, because
You might not know how clearly
I see you.
I see you as clearly as if you had cut yourself open
And shown me what you consist of
Saying, “Here I am, and that’s all there is, but you
Already knew that, didn’t you?”
Yes. I did.
Because you’re simple.
You’re only as deep as your blood and bones
All exposed to those who look to see it.
I wonder if they do.
And, you know, even when we flew
Away from home, I knew you.
So you can fly anywhere you want
And you can smile and laugh and frown
And crease your brows and command
And they might love you.
But wherever you go I will know you.
And seeing as how I’m not one to be tricked
You might as well just stop trying with me.
And I may not have the courage to
Reveal myself to anyone
But I know I’m just being smart.
And no, I will never
Love you.
