Smith's Gold Finger
Laminated, protected precious
Pages from servants’ unworthy fingers
Greasy and rough, all your fault.
Eyes can’t melt, stuck at the window
Watching plastic boats swim through the clouds.
They cry, and giggle when diamond tears
Hit the ground like miniature earthquakes
Shattering and making little craters in the floor.
You have nowhere to step when you are
Glass, now part of the window your twin’s
Eyes are stuck looking through, and
Beneath you are pages, laminated too soon
And all the ink is smeared and you cry,
Diamond tears cutting your cheeks
As you watch beautiful words turn to nothing.
Without them, color seeps from the essence
Of all your glass eyes can see,
The color collects into a crystal milk bottle
Corked with a wine stopper
Studded with jewels that used to look like you.
