"Yet imagine yourself standing at the grave of mankind; even the most extreme pessimist would surely realize the divine significance of this extinct species, and say: it was a great thing, to be human." -- Karel Čapek.

Where may I find such an elusive condition,

Or is it the sort of devil that finds me?

Mothers see their daughters as the new edition—

And I see myself as a “not-yet-anybody.”

No skill have I at navigating this transition;

How could I understand the stranger I’ll be?

Oh, I have such a terrible suspicion

Only time may set me free…

Does my life ever, ever come to fruition?

The author's comments:

"Where is Womanhood?" is an acrostic poem about growth. Every human being on the face of the Earth is constantly changing and evolving, and some transitions — such as the transition from childhood to womanhood — are exciting, frightening, and confusing all at the same time. No matter how hard we try, we cannot reliably predict our future or prepare for it; all we can do is focus on who we are in this singular fleeting moment, and have faith that we are capable of handling whatever comes next.
