Shadows

I see her. She trembles in fear behind

the sky-blue curtain, surrounded by foes, shadows,

crows flying down and around, like a swarm in her head.

Standing next to the pail white window sill, she attempts

escape. The window is open but she cannot get out.

It’s cold in there. Her phantom gray sweater with one sleeve

half rolled up covers her stick-like arms.

Why doesn’t she just leave? But she can’t leave,

for she is not truly there. This is but a memory,

and she is but a ghost, trapped forever

in a house of shadows.

This is an ekphrastic poem written about Will Barnet's "Study for the Dream" (1990).
