Yesterday I was standing in the kitchen,
happened to look outthe window
at the Moon.
It was bathing
half full of the murkyblackness,
casting a serious expression down at me.
I watched it for amoment,
enraptured by its somber wisdom,
when I happened to notice a littlestar relaxing nearby.
The city was bright,
and all other snatches of narrowstarlight
were washed away by the glow of the buildings.
There was just onestar,
one fragile beam unbroken in the sky.
A graceful companion for thelonely Moon,
and their tactful conversation
as they cascaded through thenight.
It almost made me
break out in Pink Floyd,singin'
"Sh-i-i-i-ne o-o-o-on, you cra-a-a-a-zy d-i-i-i-amond..."
while my fingers totally played keyboard on the sink.
But in theend I stood back
and simply returned its gaze.
The only star brightenough
to pierce the city's wall,
still bright enough
to rule thedarkness with the Moon.
I just stood back
and watched its courageshine.
