There was a time when they lived side-by-side
Peaceful harmony is what you would see
European nations cause their divide
After independence, conflicts proceed.

Interahamwe with machetes scare
The Tutsis forced to flee their homes or die
Indigenous tribes of Sudan compare
Janjawid attacks villages from the sky.

Two hundred peace-keepers from UN sent
Inactive role in Rwanda, regrets
Genocide in Darfur, underwent
No international aid despite threats.

It would seem we have not learned from our past
For nothing is done, just staring aghast.

The author's comments:
This sonnet is a comparison of the similarities between the Rwandan genocide of 1994 and the recent genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. This poem describes the causes and results of the genocides, and also the ineffective role played by outside forces such as the UN.
