Visiting Simplicity
CENTER THIS ONE: Swinging on the jungle gym,
left alone at the playground.
All alone.
Laughter still echoes,
the chainlink fence
still stands,
a grey witness.
When I used to return
to class after recess,
my teachers never told me,
"Don't forget simplicity,"
as if it were a carelessly
tossed off parka,
a retrievable
tangible object.
Simplicity grew
steel roots into
the blacktop
where I used to play

It will be there forever.
I left simplicity with my childhood,
with the echoing laughter,
alone,
at the playground.
