Numb

It's dark.
It's raining.
The piercing orange glow of the street light
The street is quiet at two in the morning.
It's also hard beneath your body.
You lay torn from your car on the side of the road.
The rain pelts your face like punishment.
The drunk driver remains dizzy inside the warmth of her own car.
You hear a scream.
It's not close.
Another scream.
You open your eyes only to find you'd rather close them.
Another scream, but this time its significantly louder.
It seems like eternity goes by, but then you realize that the scream, was a siren.
An ambulance going far too fast for a residential area slams on the breaks.
The rain is starting to lighten up.
A whirlwind of conversations buzz all around you.
Everything blurs together.
Only when you open your eyes does everything go silent.
You look from face to face.
You lock eyes with a paramedic that has a horrified expression.
You stand up a bit woozy, and hold on to the stop sign pole for balance.
You face the world once more.
"Tell her that I forgive her". you quietly tell anyone listening.
That's when your knees buckled.
That's when you blinked for the last time.
That's when your heart quit.
That's when your warm breath disappeared.
That's when, everything went numb.
