Who I Truly Am
My fragile heart is hidden
Deep within my hardened shell.
I cannot show my secrets dark
For fear that you will tell.
Look carefully; look closely!
Are you blind that you can't see?
Search beneath this mask and find
How radiant my soul can be.
Be kind to me; be patient,
And with a gentle nudging,
I'll show you a tiny glimpse
Of spirit not worth grudging.
Now don't tell anybody
About what you've just seen, or
I'll go right back to my cave,
And, red-faced, slam the door.
No— keep on being loving,
And I'll become more bold.
Peel back my toughened layers,
And, openmouthed, behold.
The rhythm of my heartbeat
And sweet music of my soul
Are utterly amazing
As you, drop-jawed, behold.

My fragile heart is hidden
Deep within my stony shell.
I cannot show my secrets dark,
For fear that you will tell.
Look carefully; look closely!
Are you blind that you can't see?
Search behind this mask and find
How brilliant my soul can be.
