Ode to a Forgotten Captain
Briny sea lapped its tongue against my little lifeboat,
Pushing it to and fro as it struggled to stay afloat.
I'm captain of this small sinking ship,
And before my life at sea dived into this dip,
I was head of a grand ol' ship of lore.
Oh yes, that man-of-war was stunning and strong!
But not long later that lust for power turned into lead:
Battle followed battle until the blue had been dyed red.
Farewell, my old phantom ship! Farewell, my now cut up crew!
I'll miss the treasure we never knew, in lieu of missing you.
Now alone on the water, with the sun beating down hotter and hotter,
I pass a ship and wish I could've fought 'er.
The loot I could've gained, I might've risen back to fame.
But the current's capsizing me; my sailors are sleeping under the sea.
This game of greed and this game of gold, I think the Fates have foretold
that I am to fall.
Still, here I am! And although once a captain of many,
now I am not even a captain of one.
