The Road Home
The wind picked you up and carried you away
I watched it take you across the break of day.
It set you down across the country
No city buildings to block your view of me
You said you could see the stars from there.
I heard you fell, fell away from time.
You let the moon dim; you lost your guide
And along with that I heard that you lost you smile
And your heart, they say, went cold that day
Yet, you wonder why I wrote this song
While you sing along to every word
And make me wince as you clap off beat
You said you'd never changed at all
That you had stayed the same through the fall.
And you walked down an empty road
Following signs that lied to show you where to go
And I couldn't stop you then with your mind made up
And you won't stop now with your mind undone.
So I settled for a letter sent directly to my heart
You wrote, "you took me down with your too big smile
You've held my hand and kissed me eyes.
No one has ever meant more to me,
I don't know when I'm coming home
I finally realized your love stayed the same
And I'm the one that changed.
Yet, you wonder why I wrote this song
While you sing along to every word
And make me wince as you clap off beat
You said you'd never changed at all
That you had stayed the same through the fall.
