I'm a little teapot, short and stout. Here is my handle - and here's a note from my shrink! He says I'm getting better! Last week, I thought I was a toaster oven! ~ Dot Warner

Fancy clothes, slim body, and flawless skin
Society's perfection
And yet, though it may seem quite strange
That's not her true reflection

Every day she wears a mask
From winter through the fall
And if she always puts it on
She just might fool them all

If she forgets her mask one day
If it she does not wear
The difference will be noticed
They will stop and and turn and stare

Unspoken rules of society say
The mask must always be worn
Though you might see part of who she is
If the mask should become torn

Every girl must wear this mask
That's how it seems to be
Every girl is expected to
And that's including me

The mask feels cold upon my face
It fits, yet it does not
It feels like plastic, hard and fake
It influences thought

When I do put on this mask
I feel just like a clone
I feel just like all other girls
In flesh, in blood, in bone

The mask says words all of its own
Although it cannot speak
Its words are shallow, meaningless
The girl behind is weak

I beg of you, please forgive me
If my mask falls off
Don't act like it's unusual
Don't laugh, make fun, or scoff

I also beg of you to please
Ignore society's scam
Just see right through the invisible mask
And accept me for who I am

I hope that there will come a day
When I leave that mask on the floor
I hope that there will come a time
When I'll need that mask no more

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem because I'm annoyed that all of the girls and women in magazines, ads, and on TV, look absolutely perfect. Nobody's born that way, and nobody should feel like that's what they have to look like.

"Be the change you want to see."

This is absolutely amazing. The idea is fantastic, and it defines society today very well. It all adds up to one word...Beautiful.

Great job!
