That Final Step
You take one step closer,
then another and another.
He stands there beside you,
asking you-pleading, "Please come back to me."
His voice holds you there for a moment,
your foot wanting to take that one final step.
But you can't.
You don't.
You take one step back,
then another and another.
You land beside him,
asking him-pleading, "Why did you make me come back..."
Your voice holds him there for a moment,
his hand cupping your face.
Gently, oh ever so gently, he says,
"It was never me, it's all you..."
You can never make that final step.
Time and time again,
each time filled with even more regret.
You know you'll make it one day,
you know you will succeed.
But at this time it's useless,
the cycle still goes on.
You take one step closer,
then another and another.
You take one step back,
then another and another.
But you can never take,
that one final step.
