"The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense." -Tom Clancy

One morning, I woke up to find
That my room, where I had gone to sleep
Was gone, and in its place
Was a breathtaking hillside scene

South was a dark, dense forest
West was a distant town
North was a nearby riverbank
And east... was a long way down

I headed toward that distant town
Past a desert, a farm, and a waterfall
The whole trip, however, took only ten minutes
It wasn't so far after all

Upon entering the tiny town
I realized things were rather different
The buildings were stone, as were the roads
And the people wore clothes that were rather outdated

I headed towards the castle
In the center of this Dark Ages city
All the while, trying to find out how I'd gotten here
But everyone I spoke to said I was just crazy

To my surprise, they let me in
To this incredible feat of construction
They introduced me to the king
Who told me his kingdom was not doing good

"There's a dragon," the king explained,
"Hiding in a hillside cave.
We'd send a knight to defeat it,
But not one of our knights is that brave.

"We could use your help," he concluded.
I thought for a moment or two.
"I'll do it," I replied, "but if I succeed,
There's something you must promise to do."

And that is how I ended up
In a cave, cowering behind a rock
Sword in hand, and armor trembling
Since my shield had been burnt up

He never said it was a fire-breathing dragon
And I thought that only happened in books
I sighed and the dragon heard and ran towards me
With each step, the cave ceiling shook

I ran out from my hiding place
In a stupid, spur-of-the-moment idea
I swung my sword, the dragon roared
I ran back and waited in fear

There was a sickening thud, followed by
A deep, rumbling sound
It took just a second for me to realize
The cave ceiling was crashing down

I sprinted out of the dragon's lair
And back over the countryside
Safe in the castle, the king asked what had happened
When I caught my breath, I replied

"I defeated your dragon, and though I'm not sure how,
I believe I deserve my reward."
"What is it you want?" the king asked hesitantly
I handed him my sword

"I want to go home," I replied simply
"I want to wake up in my bed
Like none of this ever happened,
Expect I want to remember and come back again."

"And so it shall be," the king agreed
"And I hope you return very soon."
The world went black, and moments later
I found myself back in my room

The school day was boring, it dragged on and on
But eventually, the evening came
It took a while to settle down
And finally drift away

Moments later, I awoke to find
That my room, where I had gone to sleep
Was gone, and in its place
Was a familiar hillside scene...

A random poem I wrote that turned from an English project to a really fun story to write. Also my first item to publish here. :)
