Lao-tzu at Hsien Pass
[A.]
It’s half past noon. The young man says.
Voice hollow as blazing leaves.
Eyes choked with autumn sand.
Will you walk? The hour is getting late.
No, child, I will ride till
I lead this beast to the waters of Karakash.
I shall walk then. For the world is yet flat
and paradise but a corner of this earth.
[B.]
See the noble man of Nod,
who found his path among
the headwaters of nameless seas.
He walks with God and is no more.
Our planes will converge:
two ladders rise, rise, rise
into the perpetual wash of sunshine—
O blessed light!
