You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone's soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows what they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.

There is a mirror upon this wall, and what more should I see
Than a vision of my own eyes, looking back at me
Except the girl attached wasn’t quite the same
And for these changes, I suppose, I have just myself to blame

She was taller, a little thinner, with a nicer shade of hair
Her skin a little tanner, with not a blemish there
Her body was not torn apart, she had no jagged scars
She just smiled happily, her wide eyes bright with stars

The reflection was amazing; it filled me up with glee
This perfect girl was everything I ever wished to be
But for all the petty differences there ever could have been
For the most astounding changes, I had to look within

She had the kindest heart you could ever hope to find
And with that came the courage to always speak her mind
She held her head up very high, didn’t care what others thought
And though she might have disagreed, she never really fought

Her pride did not consume her, as mine did often me
Her mind was always open, ready to listen and to see
Her eyes shone with compassion, it gave a certain light
And instead of what was easy, she always chose what’s right

I reached out a small scarred hand and placed in on the glass
For such an image of perfection could surely never last
Slowly, as I did this, she gave a gentle smile
And it was this action that made me stop and think a while

For this tiny little smile, and my usual mocking grin
Were just about as different as they ever could have been
And with that little smile, I began to see
That the perfect girl within the mirror was never really me

For though I am no better, my flaws make me who I am
With this thought I stepped away I and took away my hand
She took the likeness of a sun, but only for an instant
Shining ever brighter, but far and very distant

In another moment, I turned and walked away
And though I never looked back, I know she did the same
For merely a reflection was all she was
Of what I used to want to be, a dream gone all abuzz

So if you ever come upon this special looking glass
I offer you a warning; just leave it in the past
You may gaze upon it but do not linger, do not dwell
Or you may spend forever before you see as well

You’ll discover just as I did, that it isn’t really real
Along with whatever enraptures us, with such a strong appeal
Don’t let longing consume you, for it creeps upon your mind
Remember the life you live, don’t leave it all behind

I pity all the souls who forget to see the world
And couldn’t see, in that moment, that I was the better girl
Because I know of pain, I feel happiness all the more
After all isn’t that what living life is for?

Take all the good, with all the bad, and all the sour with the sweet
When getting knocked down makes you more determined to stay upon your feet
You take what life throws at you with a smile set on you face
What use would it ever be to let a frown take its place?

So leave the mirror behind you, don’t just be alive but start to live
Stop reflecting on reflections, always take less than you give
This is the message that I leave from what I learned that day
When I saw what could never be, so I turned and walked away

Though I’m not as tall, my hair not as nice a shade
I’m living in a world created by the choices I have made
Things said wrong, done poorly, blunders and mistakes
Anything that comes at me, I will gladly take

There is a mirror upon this wall and what more should I see
Than a vision of me own eyes, looking back at me
And the flawed girl attached is fine the way she is
Perfection was never something she would really miss

There is a mirror upon this wall, one that I walk past
For all the time in the world does not forever last
There is a mirror upon this wall, one that I ignore
Gaze upon the image when my life holds so much more?

I continue to look onwards, no need for looking back
To a time when I always thought of what I thought I lacked
Why look upon that image when there’s so much more to see
And to this day I thank that mirror for showing this to me

I wrote this piece at the beginning of the year and I don't know exactly what triggered it, but I guess it's kinda based off the Mirror of Erised in Harry Potter.

Thank you for commenting! It's funny that you thought of the Mirror of Erised, too. I wasn't really thinking about that when I wrote it, but it fits, doesn't it? Thanks again!

Haha, I just noticed your note. It's funny because the whole time I was reaing the poem I was thinking about The Mirror of Erised!
