Burning Blankets
I set fire to the tattered corner,
watched it eat its way to
the center, watched the few ashes
fall to a black pile on the floor.
Years of unrequited feelings
lingered in the rising smoke,
but I let them float by,
untouched and forgotten.
It used to be everything to me,
clutching it when I was lonely
though I knew I’d never
get the response I wanted,
now I watch it shrivel
on my kitchen floor
burning till it’s barely visible,
and I left it there, as I leave
the room shutting off the lights.
