Zachary is colorblind and doesn’t understand what his parents mean by “marry your own kind.”

Let me tell you a little about Zachary.

Zachary is in love with a black girl.
In response his parents say, “Not while we’re still in this world.”

Zachary’s love has nothing to do with color.
In his eyes Sarah is like no other.

Zachary wants Sarah to be his wife one day.
According to his father, “Son I will not have it, no way!”

Zachary is set on marrying his high school sweet heart.

How could true love cause his family to fall apart?

Due to circumstances, Zachary and Sarah elope.

Zachary’s mother is still trying to cope.

Zachary also decides to vote for President Obama.

Look at what he is doing to his poor mama.

The couple goes to New York City for their honeymoon.

You bet the parents are not singing a happy toon.

This poem is about dating outside your race and having the courage to face parents who do not support your decision. I am African- American/Native American, and I have so problems dating outside of race. In fact my mother supports me 100%. I wrote this poem for teens who are struggling to date outside their race because of what their parents might think or others.
