All The Pretty Horses
All The Pretty Horses
And when all the prisoners began to riot
We made a break and slipped past the guards
Walked the four blocks down to the station
With two packs of cigarettes and a deck of cards
We tried to board that midnight train
But the conductor kicked us off
The city don’t take kindly to kids like us
So that night we slept on the sidewalk
The sun in our eyes woke us up in the morning
With bad hangovers and broken jaws
People in business suits on their way to work
They paid us no mind at all
The calendar drops its pages like leaves
From its branch upon the western wall
I heard you’ve got a place in California
And that you’re gonna be a movie star
You have your drugs you have your reasons
To ward off whatever lurks beneath your bed
But we know that to sleep is perchance to dream
So close your eyes and rest your spinning head
Take the orange ones when you can’t focus
And the white ones when you can’t sleep
The blue ones help when you’re feeling down
The gray ones to keep you steady on your feet
One to confirm your presence and purpose
And two to fill the hole in your mind
Three to numb the splinters in your heart
And four to pass the time
I have my work I have my regrets
And a friend to keep me company
But I always leave the front door unlocked
In case you ever decide to come back to me
