When We Reach the City
Bombs falling like rain
Lights, blinding beautiful lights
Humanity crying out in pain,
The bird prepared to take flight.
Ash, smoke, dust
The city burning bright
The dying eyes caught in TV's lust
And holding denial tight.
As terror once again begins its reign,
The horizon fades to night.
Not a soul to look through their window panes
The glory of fires delight
So many things to combust,
So many books to set alight.
It is no wonder the mistrust
We have gained for trying to set things right
Control, power, so much to attain
By setting down books with spite
Inject electronics into the brain,
And watch how little they fight.
So, as we look on in disgust
Know you will never more ignite
With the winds smoldering gust
What's left for us to do now, is to sit down and write.

For summer homework we had to read the book Fahrenheit 451, and this poem is inspired by the final scene looking back at the burning city. If you haven't read the book I highly recommend reading it.
