The Toad Prince
I found him in a shallow puddle,
His plump body mossy green,
Bored eyes and an upside down smile,
The prettiest toad I’d ever seen.
I picked him up with gentle hands,
And looked into his handsome face,
Just before I put him in my pocket,
I whispered “It’s okay; you're safe.”
I took him to my room,
And placed him on my bed,
Then made him a tinfoil crown,
To wear upon his head.
Oh, the joy of my discovery,
A creature to take care of,
My charming toady friend,
To whom I’d give my love.
But my handsome toad then jumped,
From my bed onto the ground.
Then hopped across the floor,
Leaving his foil crown.
Emptiness filled my heavy heart,
And though I tried to convince,
He was no knight in shining armor,
Nor a handsome prince.
