That Man
I said hello to that man.
That man on the tee-vee,
With his name and number on the board
He holds above his chest.
He is not smiling in the picture
That the news station is showing
But I distinctly remember a
Smile on that grim face.
I waved and said hello to that man,
The man that killed my friend,
I told him to be careful
When he tripped on the loose carpet.
I wished him good luck
When he mentioned a big interview with a stern boss,
Nervously rubbing the back of his neck.
I rubbed his shoulder and told him he'd do fine.
If I knew that he had a short fuse,
If I'd known that my best friend was the interviewer,
I would have kept him there for a little while
Longer.
