"... but remember, it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." - Atticus Finch (To Kill A Mockingbird)

She falls asleep,
Her dreams hold monsters,
Her fingers grip tightly together,

She hates when it happens,
She hates how it happens,
Begs them to disappear, forever.

She wakes up,
She opens her eyes,
To a completely lightless space.

She stands up,
What time is it?
Oh, it's midnight, in her case.

She breaths in,
She walks out,
Of the room, looking for another.

She continues on,
And crosses the space,
Separating her from her brother.

She reaches up,
She turns the nob,
To find the door is locked.

She lets out a sigh,
She raises her hand,
And slowly, softly, she knocked.

She waits a second,
Waits a moment,
She seems to wait a while.

She looks up,
Hears the lock click,
And opens the door with a smile.

She steps right in,
And looks at him,
And he kindly smiles back.

She watches him,
He sets up a blanket,
Asking if she wants a snack.

She politely declines,
He nods his head,
Asking if she wants a story read.

She grins, excited,
He laughs, delighted,
Curling up at the end of the bed.

She doesn't know why,
He lets her have,
Most of the space where they lay.

She takes up more room,
He shakes his head,
And with a laugh, says it's okay.

She falls asleep,
Her dreams now safe,
Not hearing her brother say,

He doesn't mind,
Her depending on him,
He wouldn't have it any other way.
