Nightmare
In the darkness of the dream
 The blood begins to flow
 And in the strange half-memory
Is the light that left the eyes

 And disappeared for fifteen years
Until the pain was not so great,
 the name barely spoken'
and then twinkles in the dark

Above the dark and thickening blood
Where the watcher, at last, may see
And the weight lifts from his chest
As he falls to his knees'through the blood

The light is gone, the darkness dense
But the fear is as faint perfume, and gone
The sleeper wakes, calm and still
 Smiles, almost, in the night,
then shifts and sighs and closes his eyes.

The nightmare, at last, is done.
