A Daughter in a Daughter
We broke up last winter but not on our terms,
She’d become pregnant and her parents had learned.
She was so far along, how couldn’t they have seen
How beautiful a vessel their daughter had been?
They fought and fought until we nearly went deaf,
That’s about the time I knew it’d be better if I left.

Before I left she touched my cheek,
I opened my mouth but couldn’t speak.
She looked at my lips, looked deeply into my eyes,
The confidence in her tone catching me by surprise,
So surely she said, “I promise you we’ll meet again
The rules won’t break but they will bend.”

A short time passes and there she stands,
A miniature me sound asleep in her hands.
