That Summer
Oh Father Time, please turn your clocks
Back a couple years.
Take me to the good ol’ days-
The summer of no fears.
I miss our backyard barbecues
And picnics in the grass.
Just you and me, and me and you,
We made the moments last.
With lips stained blue from popsicles
And tangled, sun-bleached hair,
We babbled on for hours and
We laughed without a care.
We’d lie beneath the twinkling lights
And watch the fireflies-
Flitting, twirling, glowing sights-
Dance right before our eyes.
With kicked-off sandals cast aside
And sun-tanned legs so bare,
We’d sink our toes in cool wet mud
And breathe the summer air.
Together, we could suspend time
Make minutes last for days
I’ve been waiting for your letter,
But we’ve since then parted ways.
If only things had never changed
Why did they have to end?
Those precious, breezy summer nights
I spent with my best friend.
