Why can’t you love me as the stars do?
See how they dance unabashed tonight,
Flaunting and twinkling bright silver light;
Why then do you hide behind a mask,
A face different from your own?

Ask,
Me, though you know what I will tell you.
I’ve tried to love you like you’ve deserved—
But for our safety I am reserved;
Remember, prejudice is a threat—
For our love, the world’s not ready yet.

What do you think this means? First stanza is one speaker; the second is someone else responding.

Personally, I really like this poem! I find it quite relatable and beautifully written :)

WriteorWrong, thank you so much for the thorough feedback. And for pointing out those mistakes. GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I don't know how I was so careless to not notice them before. (Oh wait, the "Me" was to be capitalized. "Ask" had to be farther out, not right there. Teenink messes up the format sometimes. But thank you for poiting it out.) I appreciate your interpreting this poem. For taking the time to deciphering it. Your interpretation is right on cue. But like all poetry, anyone can interpret it any way he/she wants to. Thank you.

Firstly, I would like to try to answer the question you posed in the description. This is how I interpreted it: si stars don't try to conceal what they are; they are bright and blatant and exposed. They aren't hiding from anyone the first person is asking why the second won't show their love like the stars show who they are. The second person wants to give the person the kind of love like the stars do but is afraid to do so because of what society may think. In effort to protect the first person and not be judged or found out he tries to be something he's not. His/ her true self and desires fade in direct opposition to the bare stars. I thought this was referring to homosexuality. One person wants to express their love but the other feels they can't if they want to be accepted even if they are accepted for something they are not. That's what I got out it anyway. That was probably a really long explanation. So anyway, feedback: ask doesn't need a comma after and me doesn't need to be capitalized. I am kind of half in favor/ half against the last two lines of the first stanza. I sort of like that it is so explicit but I guess it just depends if you want to tell the reader your message or show them your message. I really adore the beginning. Such beautiful imagery. Great flow especially in the second stanza. Unique work, keep it up!
