"Mostly you can depend on a wolf to be a wolf."
-Eddie Fyres

Adrift on an empty sea,
My island but a dream.
Grasping a fragment of driftwood,
An old discarded beam.

The storm came wild in the night,
A chaotic swirl of loss,
That sank my island below,
And gave me to the sea to toss.

My island was never a paradise,
But a refuge that lent me respite,
It gave me food to sustain myself,
And silent company in the night.

From it I saw the mainland,
Though it was too far to reach,
But it gave me hope to keep on living,
As I lay on that lonely beach.

But the thunder rolled in one night,
As I lay on the sand unaware,
Gazing across the water,
At the coastline with nary a care.

When it struck me without any warning,
Tearing my haven to shreds,
Sinking it into the ocean,
Replacing my peace with dread.

So now I float lost on the waves,
Doomed to a wandering ride,
Across a moving wet dessert,
Rent by despair from inside.
