must I associate with you before it’s excessive

How many rhythms may our love pulse with

before it flatlines

unless God put Himself here and made it

immortal

How many times will the key change

and alter the way my chest

sinks and rises in an ocean of blood

How often will I find you

when your song is playing

and can you believe

that your voice will always be

enough

How can this happen?

How intense is purity

if we were once

cirrus clouds

then stratus

now fog

How soon will I reach the limit

if there is one at all

and if I or we do

isn’t the performance subjective

I’d like this

would you

How can I be the melody

if I harmonize to you

How much music can you give me

to fill my senses

and can you control that enough

to where I can still

breathe

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece this summer during my session at Interlochen and my whole poetry class reviewed it (thankfully) and I finally have it at a point where I'd like to share it. This is written for a boy I met two years ago, during my first year at Interlochen, and have had feelings for ever since. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to attend my final reading where I read this, so Henry, if you're listening, enjoy this I guess. For everyone else, I hope you enjoy the swirl of love and music imagery I've incorporated into this piece. Ta-ta for now!
