Nature's Calling
The woods greet us, peaceful and quiet,
booming with wildlife and whipping winds.
Sitting in the crumpled leaves from the autumn before, my mother and I make our mark.
Green sprouts, signaling spring is here.
Climbing sprout of a blooming seed reach like a hand for the sunlight.
Daisies turn to the heat to warm their glowing white petals.
Leaves uncurl from the buds on the scattered willow branches.
Trees come alive, provide shade to the ants marching on damp ground.
The drumming and hammering of a woodpecker carves a home in the trees.
Rapid fire of the mighty beak drills the stiff tree bark.
Squirrels bound on fragile young grass collecting maple seeds.
We watch the squirrels grab the tree with bare paws, scurrying to the top.
Turkeys gobble with power. We hear them a mile away.
Strutting over the ridge towards me,
They fan making themselves as big as they can.
Feathers shimmer in the sunlight, a halo of yellow and orange light in the air.
A winding stream trickles near-by.
Water tumbles over the shiny black rocks.
Water bugs skim the top like ice skaters with grace, as
minnows swim just below the surface.
A new season sprouts which continues to amaze.
We sit quietly to watch and listen to the nature surrounding me,
a quiet hush to my heart.
Mother Earth speaks out, saying spring has sprung.
