An Orange House
I came from an obnoxious orange house
with overgrown vegetation
that hides and somber melodies inside.
A history of “un-happily-ever-afters”
with fighting at night, mom reading happy fairy tales
being the magical element in my life.
Sisters and Molly an unspoken communication
with each lick of the popsicle
our childhoods fade.
Bittersweet chocolate cake tastes sweet
with the first bite
but gets sour as you eat.
Tutoring, assignments not on the fridge
“As long as you tried your best.”
with a grin being the phrase.
Fidgeting hands
average grades
with a rattling bottle that helps fix the problem.
Religion being handed to me with a stern fist
just another black coat in New York City
with judging looks comparing me.
One half not being able to put the drink down
with hidden emotions
to make it easier for the other half.
I am from new beginnings a smaller room, but feeling bigger.
The fresh can of paint brightens not only my room
with the music changing to a happy-go-lucky-tune.
A plan of being my own hero
quietness is my new best friend
with a real smile that feels assuring.
Being on my own
licking every last drop of childhood
with a fond memory of “just yesterday.”
New recipe forming
one of apple pie, sweetness
with a secret ingredient of love.
Standard set for myself
“C’s aren't good enough.”
with a determination to get into Oklahoma.
Going in for help when needed
understanding that there is help
with a proud smile.
Relationship changed
from not accepting to supporting
with prayers not being forced.
Both halfs signing a paper
set free from each other
with a golden pen our improved family signs our happiness back.
